Overcoming Over-Preparation During Job Interviews

The importance of preparing for a job interview cannot be underestimated. However, being too prepared can sometimes work against you! During interviews, especially when it comes to sales-related positions, you want your true personality to shine to give the interviewer an insight on how you would act and behave with your boss, coworkers and clients in the different situations.
While being impolite, disrespectful or having the wrong answers will come in the way of your potential employment, it has been shown that being over-prepared and sounding too idealistic may also harm your chances during interviews. Over-preparation is an easy trap to fall into, particularly if you are keen on a job and want to give it your very best shot.
Since most recruiters heard those perfect answers over and over again and they can tell when someone has just memorized the whole thing and is just repeating it off a book or an article, you should allow your true personality to do the talking. Consider these 3 tips to help you demonstrate your true personality and to avoid sounding too over-prepared:
  • Don’t be afraid to acknowledge your self-awareness in an interview to show you know your emotional weaknesses.
  • Try to demonstrate your adaptability with real situations when you’ve faced unexpected issues and how you overcame them.
  • Provide examples of times you’ve managed conflict, solved problems effectively, and used your influence to achieve positive results.
Always remember that your education, your experiences, what you’ve learned on your own about the company has gotten you to this point, but what will seal your success is your ability to genuinely relate to others.
